21st Literature Genres (Doodle Fiction, Manga, and Graphic Novel)

21st Century Literature refers to new literary work created within the last decade. It is written by contemporary authors who may deal with current themes or issues and reflects a technological culture. It often breaks traditional writing rules.

Put your feelings into a doodle! 😉

Doodle Fiction is one of the modern literary genres presently used by 21st Century writers. If we are talking about doodles, let's just remember how we draw shapes, human figures, and vandalize our armchairs and tables in school. For me, those are considered as doodle drawings where we unconsciously draw out of nowhere during classes at school or in a meeting at work because it helps relieve boredom and frustration.

I didn't encounter or read a doodle fiction book in my whole life but as a 21st Century reader who grew up using technology as a primary learning tool, I stream videos on Youtube and subscribe to great and talented artists like GingerPale (Devon Arnaud) and Mr. Doodles (Sam Cox) uploading their satisfying videos on their channel.

Manga female readers prefer reading romance novels and male readers prefer the action genre.

Manga is a form of art and storytelling comic books and graphic novels originated in Japan. I read a lot of manga novels online like Kimi Ni Todoke and Ao Haru Ride but then something happened and I stopped reading manga at all. I realized that everything in Manga is overexaggerated, the characters' powers and hair colors, everything.

There are a lot of conversations to turn the story and the panels vary in sizes so I was confused about where to start reading. My friends knew that I'm reading manga on my phone when I have free time in school but they suggest that I should watch anime rather than reading it because, for them, it's boring and tiring to scroll all day and I agree with that. I had my flash drive the next morning and I copied a lot of animes. But then, I also didn't finish a single anime series because I was amazed and distracted by Korean Dramas.

Sites and phone applications that
I used to read Manga novels:
MangaToon and MangaMelon

ELEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Manga always pertains to the Japanese culture, the people, and their environment. The graphic, panels, and symbols of a Manga book indicate the movements, sound, and emotional states of the characters.

A graphic novel is a long comic narrative for a mature audience and it used an Americanized art style in drawing. I don't know much about graphic novels but remembering the time I went to my aunt's house, her son was reading a book titled Pinnochio. It consists of speech balloons, the dialogues were suitable for mature readers and it gives a moral lesson in life.

I installed an application on my phone called Webtoon and it is quite similar to Manga but it's not. Webtoon originated from South Korea and I can say that it is a graphic novel application because it encompasses real-life situations and emphasizes character development and personal journeys.

ELEMENT AND STRUCTURE

Graphic Novels uses the interplay of text and illustrations in a comic-strip format to tell a story. Instead of relying on just text to construct a narrative, it uses graphical elements in a sequential way to evoke a story in a reader's mind.

SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE THREE
21st Century Literature Genres

1.) Each contains a different style but the same technique in storytelling which uses handwritten drawings or graphics.

2.) All graphical elements such as panels, layouts, speech balloons, gutter, and frames are present.

3.) It is somehow similar to watching a movie but the difference is that you are flipping several pages of a book or scrolling it through mobile phones.
